Child Mortality, defined as deaths of children under the age of 5, is on a steady decline over the world.  In India the situation is improving but as of today about 1/4th of the total deaths in the world happen in India. India also contributes to about 30% of the overall neo natal deaths(deaths of children within 30 days of birth). 3 controllable diseases namely:- pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria are the biggest reasons for child mortality in India.

Specialist within the filed for pediatrics are limited in numbers. For example there are on about 50 pediatric oncologists to treat an approximate 30000 new cases of cancer in children, and an even lesser number of pediatric cardiologists in the country where about 150000 children at birth have congenital heart diseases.
